Time Zones and How to Change Them

Setting the correct time zone in POINT ensures your events display accurately for both the organization and volunteers. Generally, the time zone automatically matches the location of the event, keeping everything consistent no matter where you or your team are located. 

In this article, we’ll walk you through how time zones work for both organizations and volunteers.

Time Zones for Organization Accounts

Default Time Zone: The default time zone is automatically set based on the organization’s physical address. If the time zone is incorrect, please update the organization’s address in your organization profile.

In-Person Events: For in-person events, the time zone is automatically set according to the event’s physical location. You can see the time zone listed in the “Where” section (just below the "Hide exact address" checkbox).

Virtual Events: For virtual events, you have the ability to manually change the time zone. Here is how:

  1. While creating a virtual event, navigate to the Where & When section.

  2. Select Virtual for the "Where" option.

  3. Click the Change link located under the “Instructions on how to participate virtually or at home” box


  4. Search for your location on the map, then click Save.

Time Zones for Volunteer Accounts

A volunteer account's time zone depends entirely on the location saved in their account settings. To ensure accuracy, make sure that all address lines are fully filled out in the volunteer’s profile.

Note: If an address is not provided, the system will attempt to determine your location, provided you have granted location permissions in the POINT mobile app.

Why does the system need a volunteer's address?

We need your address to correctly display local volunteer opportunities on your main Volunteer page. By default, the "Where" filter is automatically set to the address saved in your profile. If the system doesn't know where you are located, we won't know which events to recommend!

(Unless you want us to show you events in Antarctica so you can volunteer with the penguins! 🐧)


How to change the time zone when self-submitting hours:

When a volunteer is manually submitting their hours, they can change the time zone for that specific entry.

On the “Add Hours” form, click Change Time Zone under the Start Time field, select the correct time zone from the dropdown, complete the form, and click Add.
