How to Sign Up as a Volunteer on POINT

Welcome to POINT! This guide walks you through creating your volunteer account, sharing your birthdate, and getting started. The whole process takes about 2 minutes.

In this article:

  1. Volunteer vs. Admin sign-up: what's the difference?
  2. Step 1: Open the sign-up page
  3. Step 2: Create your volunteer account
  4. Step 3: Share your birthdate
  5. Step 4: Sign up for text updates (optional)
  6. Step 5: Verify your email

Volunteer vs. Admin sign-up: what's the difference?

POINT offers two sign-up paths, depending on your role:

  • Sign up as a Volunteer: for individuals who want to find causes they love, log hours, and track their impact. The volunteer flow includes a birthdate step to comply with event age restrictions and waivers.
  • Sign up as an Organization Admin: for nonprofits, schools, and other organizations that want to manage volunteers, track impact, and run programs. The admin flow includes a step to create an organization.

📝 Note: Both paths create the same kind of POINT account. You can always switch between Volunteer View and Admin View once you're signed in. See How to switch between Admin and Volunteer View.

Step 1: Open the sign-up page

  1. Go to dash.pointapp.org/sign-up.
  2. On the sign-in page, click Sign up as a volunteer at the bottom of the form.

You'll be taken to the Sign up as a Volunteer page.

💡 Tip: If you already have a POINT account, click Sign In at the top to log in instead.

Step 2: Create your volunteer account

On the Sign up as a Volunteer page, you have two options:

Option A: Sign up with Google or Apple

Click one of the SSO buttons:

  • Continue with Google: signs you up using your Google account.
  • Continue with Apple: signs you up using your Apple ID.

This is the fastest option since you don't need to create or remember a separate password.

After authenticating with Google or Apple, you'll see the Finish setting up your account screen with a few more details:

  1. First Name and Last Name:
    • If you signed in with Google, these are pre-filled from your Google profile. You can edit them if needed.
    • If you signed in with Apple, these fields may be empty (Apple doesn't share your name with apps by default). Enter your name manually.
  2. Email Address is shown as read-only (it's the email from your Google or Apple account).
  3. Check the box to agree to the Terms of Use, Community Guidelines, and Privacy Policy, and to confirm you're 13 or older.
  4. Optional: check the box to receive updates and new feature announcements.
  5. Click Continue.

📝 Note about Apple's Hide My Email: If you signed in with Apple and chose to hide your email, you'll see a randomized email like xyz@privaterelay.appleid.com. This is Apple's privacy feature, and it works normally with POINT. Emails sent from POINT will be forwarded to your real Apple ID email address.

📝 Important: Your account is not created in POINT until you complete this step and click Continue. If you close the page before clicking Continue, no account will exist yet.

Option B: Sign up with email

  1. Enter your First Name and Last Name.
  2. Enter your Email Address.
  3. Create a Password and confirm it.
  4. Check the box to agree to the Terms of Use, Community Guidelines, and Privacy Policy, and to confirm you're 13 or older.
  5. Optional: check the box to receive updates and new feature announcements.
  6. Click Create Account.

Step 3: Share your birthdate

After creating your account, you'll be asked to share your birthdate.

  1. Select your Month, Day, and Year from the dropdowns.
  2. Click Continue.

Why we ask for your birthdate

We ask for your birthdate to make your volunteer experience smoother. With this information on file, you won't have to enter it every time you:

  • Sign up for an event with an age restriction (for example, an event for volunteers aged 18+).
  • Complete a waiver that requires age verification.
  • Apply for an application that requires age information.

To ensure the safety of youth volunteers and comply with privacy regulations, we need to confirm your age to apply the appropriate guidelines.

Step 4: Sign up for text updates (optional)

Next, you'll see the Sign up for text updates? screen. This is optional and you can always set it up later.

If you want to receive text updates:

  1. Enter your phone number.
  2. Check the box to agree to receive occasional text messages from organizations you interact with on POINT.
  3. Click Send Verification Code and enter the code sent to your phone.

If you want to skip this step:

Click Skip. You can set up text updates anytime from your account settings.

💡 Tip: Text messages are a great way to stay updated on event reminders and important announcements from organizations you volunteer with. To learn more, see Automatic Text Messages from POINT.

Step 5: Verify your email

You'll be taken to your Volunteer Home page, where you can start exploring opportunities.

📝 Important: Check your inbox for a verification email from POINT and click the link inside to verify your email address. This step is required to keep your account active.

For step-by-step instructions and troubleshooting if you don't receive the verification email, see How does a volunteer verify their email?.
