Your organization determines the appropriate level of screening for each role, based on your own policies and applicable requirements.

WHICH PACKAGE FITS WHICH ROLE

As a starting point:

1. Basic Plus: low-risk volunteer roles and one-off community events (park cleanups, food drives, festival help).

2. Essential: most volunteer programs, including general programs, food banks, community events, and the super volunteers your organization depends on.

3. Complete: schools, executive roles, and volunteers working with vulnerable populations (foster care, YMCAs, camps, faith organizations). Often combined with ID Verification.

4. Add MVR (motor vehicle records) to any package for volunteers who drive: meal delivery, youth transport, medical rides.

PACKAGES AND PRICING

All prices are per report at POINT preferred rates. Complete bundles the federal + state searches most competitors charge as separate add-ons. Prices exclude third-party pass-through fees. POINT does not provide legal or compliance advice.

ADD-ONS

Strengthen screening where risk is highest. Add-ons can be combined with packages:

• Motor vehicle record (MVR): +$5. For any driving role, such as meal delivery, youth transport, or medical rides. Add to any package.

• Federal criminal: +$7.50. Searches federal district court records and catches offenses that county and state searches won't surface.

• ID verification: available with any package. A quick document + liveness check before the background check starts, so you only screen real, verified candidates.

County add-on on Basic Plus: If a national criminal search identifies potential records, Checkr automatically completes criminal searches in the relevant counties for $8 per county (Checkr list price: $15), plus any court fees. Essential and Complete already include county searches.
 

HOW BILLING WORKS

Checkr bills your organization directly (credit card or ACH) with a monthly invoice, one line item per report and pass-through fees itemized separately.

You only pay for checks you run. Connecting the integration and adding a card doesn't charge you anything.

Your organization retains control of adjudication and report access. Assess (Light) is included at no additional cost and automatically clears reports based on your organization's rules.

WHAT A CHECK REALLY COSTS: PASS-THROUGH FEES

Some jurisdictions and agencies charge their own access fees. Checkr collects these and passes them through exactly as charged, with zero markup, itemized separately on your invoice.

The four fee buckets:

• Court fees: charged by counties/states to pull criminal records; vary widely.

• MVR / DMV fees: many DMVs charge to pull driving records; varies by state.

• Verification fees: small database access fees for employment or education checks.

• Drug & health: vary by clinic (for example, ~$90 after-hours rush fee).

A typical Essential check, all-in: $34.99 package + $0-22 court fee (if a county record is pulled). Most volunteers land at ~$35-57. Court fees only apply if a record is found and vary by county.

A few states charge more per record: New York $95, Pennsylvania (PATCH) $22. Others cover screening entirely: Massachusetts waives criminal screening fees for organizations serving kids, elderly, or disabled populations. A full fee list is always included with Checkr pricing.

BACKGROUND CHECK SCREENING DETAILS

SSN Trace and Identity

Confirms the Social Security Number is valid and identifies both the state and the year of issuance. The search also covers the national death index. Learn more here.

Sex Offender Registry

Checkr searches sex offender registries in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Any known sex offender matching your candidate is listed with identifying information, as well as details of the offense(s), depending on the state or reporting jurisdiction. Learn more here.

Global Watchlist Records

Checkr searches various US and international government watch lists, such as the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), Interpol, and Specially Designated Nationals. Learn more here.

National Criminal Records

A multi-jurisdictional search that encompasses numerous sources: national security sources, numerous federal databases, and arrest and criminal data from various local, county, and state agencies. Learn more here.

County Criminal Search (7 years)

Searches county criminal records for the counties returned for the applicant over the last 7-year period, including legally reportable felony and misdemeanor convictions, pending cases, and dismissed records. Included without limits in Essential and Complete. On Basic Plus, county searches run only as an add-on (see Add-ons above). Learn more about county criminal searches.

Federal Criminal Search (10 years)

Searches federal district court records for crimes prosecuted at the federal level over the last 10 years, such as fraud, embezzlement, and crimes that cross state lines. Included in Complete; available as a +$7.50 add-on on other packages.

State Criminal Search (7 years)

Searches state criminal record repositories for felony and misdemeanor records over the last 7-year period. Included in Complete.

Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)

Reports the status of an operator's driving privileges, restrictions, expiration date, license type and class, endorsements, suspensions or revocations, DUI history, moving violations, and accidents for the state where the applicant's license was issued. Learn more here.

ID Verification

A quick document + liveness verification before the background check starts. Confirms the candidate is who they say they are, so you only screen real, verified candidates.
